I have a bit of a beef with issue #21.
The last issue set the scene with Kitty and Harley talking about their respective relationships with Bruce and the Joker. Harley finally came to the realization that he she had been sorely taken advantage of. So, she sets off to break into Arkham and kill the Joker.
Obviously, I knew she wouldn’t kill him. She can’t. It’s one of the things which holds this series back- they can’t interfere with main story lines. But anyway- it’s a really fantastic demonstration of Harley’s strength as a person and as a character. I’ve loved every bit of it. How she gets into Arkham, and that we get to see into her head. (SPOILER UNDER THE CUT)
HOWEVER- it was a very predictable and giant let down once she gets to the Joker. Again, I KNOW she couldn’t kill him. But she could have at least slapped him in the face. He deserves at least that. But oh no, once again we’re back to Harley being completely selflessly infatuated and a complete pushover. Motherfuckers. I know Paul Dini’s got a lot going on (Writing Streets of Gotham and Zatanna- which are two amazing series as well) but seriously? How did you let them do this to me?
Ever since Dini passed the torch on GCS the story line has felt a bit confusing. Like they have too many ideas all coming together at once, and no one’s sure which direction they want to go in. I still love it. I love Guillem March’s cover work. But can’t we get a strong female being strong for more than five minutes? Not to sound feminist, but that girl was on a mission. Joker had done her wrong and she was pissed. Let her be pissed at him. Don’t just have her fall into his arms and THE END. UGH.
